What are the reasons why Coca-Cola chose hypochlorous acid water/hypochlorous acid generator as CIP cleaning disinfectant?

The United States Coca-Cola Company chose HOCL water/HOCL generator as CIP cleaning disinfectant for the following reasons:

The US FDA has approved the legal use of hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) in the food industry and medical industry. The Coca-Cola Company of the United States has specified the use of hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) as the cleaning and disinfectant solution for the CIP process in filling plants around the world, and has installed and used it in three filling plants in China, with good results.

In February 2020, in order to scientifically guide the public to use disinfectants correctly and give full play to the effective role of disinfectants in the prevention and control of the new coronavirus epidemic, the National Health Commission organized the Disinfection Standards Professional Committee to compile the “Guidelines for the Use of Disinfectants”. It is clarified that hypochlorous acid disinfectant is suitable for disinfecting object surfaces, fabrics and other contaminated items, as well as water, fruits and vegetables, and eating and drinking utensils. In addition to the above uses, it can also be used to disinfect indoor air, surfaces of secondary water supply equipment and facilities, hands, skin and mucous membranes.

 

The China Beer Association has also included the application of hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) as a technological innovation project in the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”. China Resources Group’s Snow Brewery base and several branches use hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) for disinfection. In 2013, the Food Safety Laboratory of Ocean University of China and the State Key Laboratory of Beer Biological Fermentation Engineering jointly conducted research on the application of hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) technology in CIP disinfection of beer production.

Laboratory results show that hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) with an effective chlorine concentration of more than 17 ppm (pH 2.4-3.2, ORP>1100mV) treated for 5 minutes has excellent killing effect on Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus brevis. , its bactericidal ability can reach the same level as 2% peracetic acid.

 

The results of on-site CIP cleaning experiments show that using hypochlorous acid water (electrolyzed water) with an effective chlorine concentration of 17 ppm for 10-15 minutes of circulating cleaning can achieve a good pipeline disinfection effect without the need for clean water for flushing. At the same time, hypochlorous acid water ( Cleaning with electrolyzed water will not affect the freshness of the beer.

 

Globally, in addition to the American Coca-Cola Company, there are many companies and industries that use hypochlorous acid water/hypochlorous acid generators as CIP cleaning and disinfection solutions. Here are some specific examples:
