Advantages of hypochlorous acid for veterinary use —in the field of breeding and pet medicine

Oct31,24

  • Using a hypochlorous acid generator can improve the disinfection effect of pet hospitals, reduce the risk of cross-infection, and provide a safer and more hygienic medical environment for pets and employees. HOCLdisinfectants are widely used in pet shops, pet hospitals and other places for environmental disinfection . Specifically, slightly acidic electrolytic water disinfectants can be loaded into a sprayer and sprayed directly on the surface of an object or the body of a pet, or atomized and sprayed in the environmental space.
  • Modern breeding facilities generally adopt highly intensive production and high stocking density. If the feeding management, environmental hygiene, disinfection and sterilization measures are not in place, it will inevitably lead to a poor breeding environment, the breeding of pathogenic bacteria, and even the spread of diseases in severe cases, which will directly cause economic losses.

Working principle:

As a strong oxidant, hypochlorous acid (HClO) kills viruses and other microorganisms based on the following three steps:

Adsorption : Hypochlorous acid molecules can be adsorbed onto the surface of microorganisms through physical effects such as electrostatic adsorption, hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonding.

Penetration : HOCL is then able to enter the microorganisms, destroying their cell walls and cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability, thus dissolving and destroying the cell interior.

Oxidation : Slightly acidic electrolytic water can also react with important substances in microorganisms such as lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, causing oxidation of these substances and leading to the death of microorganisms.

The characteristics of hypochlorous acid disinfectant are its broad-spectrum bactericidal ability and high-efficiency disinfection effect, which makes it one of the commonly used disinfectants in life.

The cell membrane surface is negatively charged, so hypochlorite (ClO-, also negatively charged) cannot easily enter the cell, while hypochlorous acid (HClO) is a neutral small molecule that can penetrate the cell membrane, enter the cell, and react with the DNA and mitochondria inside, causing them to die. This also explains to a certain extent why HCLO has a stronger bactericidal ability than sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) under the same effective chlorine conditions.

Breeding field

HOCL water is widely used in pig farms for disinfection and deodorization of livestock and poultry houses. It can efficiently and safely purify and disinfect the breeding environment to prevent the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases.

Hypochlorous acid disinfectants are also widely used in livestock farming, such as dairy cows, pigs, and poultry, for overall cleaning and disinfection.

Taking pig farm practice as an example

  • Disinfection and deodorization in livestock and poultry houses

The feces and harmful gases produced during animal breeding not only pollute the environment and reduce air quality, but also endanger the health of front-line workers in the long run. Ammonia (NH3) is one of the main harmful gases in livestock and poultry houses, especially pig houses. It can cause conjunctivitis and upper respiratory tract inflammation in livestock. Long-term effects can also induce chronic ammonia poisoning, which in turn leads to reduced body resistance, easily induces diseases, and affects animal growth.

Analyzing the whole house situation, when hypochlorous acid spray was not used, the average ammonia value of the whole house was 12.61ppm. After using hypochlorous acid spray, the average ammonia value of the whole house was 7.38-11.84ppm, which was 6.1%-41.5% lower than that when it was not used, as shown in the following figure:

In the same house, the areas A and D were divided into two zones, spraying was used in the test areas A and D, and spraying was not used in the control areas BC. The ammonia values in the control areas and the test areas were compared. The results showed that when spraying was not used, the average ammonia values in each zone were: 14.88ppm in area A, 15.38ppm in area BC, and 7.59ppm in area D; when spraying was used, area BC was used as the blank control group, and the total average ammonia value was 11.07ppm, while the total average ammonia values in areas A and D were 9.59ppm and 5.84ppm, respectively. Compared with the situation when spraying was not used, the changes in ammonia values in each zone were 35.5% lower in area A, 28.0% lower in area BC, and 23.1% lower in area D, indicating that the use of hypochlorous acid spray can reduce the ammonia level in the house.

The results of the air disinfection and deodorization test of slightly acidic electrolyzed water in a piggery are as follows:

The study showed that spraying with slightly acidic electrolyzed water with an effective chlorine concentration of 116±5 mg/L (spraying volume of about 100 L, spraying time of about 15 min) can effectively reduce the ammonia content in the pig house, and the ammonia reduction rate can reach 52.27%; and the removal effect of slightly acidic electrolyzed water on ammonia is significantly better than that of tap water spray. After 3.5 hours of spraying, the ammonia content in the pig house has not reached the initial concentration.

At the same time, the spray treatment of slightly acidic electrolyzed water can effectively reduce the total number of colonies in the air in the pig house, and the reduction effect is significantly better than that of the control group, with a decrease rate of 71.24%; 3.5 hours after spraying, the total number of colonies in the air in the pig house is lower than the initial number.

Experiments have shown that hypochlorous acid water can effectively eliminate bacteria and viruses on pig houses and equipment, remove odors, and reduce the risk of pigs being infected with diseases.

  • Disinfection of vehicles and supplies

Before vehicles and materials enter the breeding area, they will carry a large number of bacteria and viruses. If they enter the farm or production workshop without strict disinfection, they may cause the spread of epidemics, leading to poultry and livestock illnesses or food contamination, causing serious economic losses to the company.

Through a comparative study on the effects of slightly acidic electrolyzed water and compound phenol on vehicle spray disinfection, it was found that the effect of slightly acidic electrolyzed water with an effective chlorine concentration of 80 mg/L on the surface spray disinfection of incoming vehicles has reached the effect of compound phenol with an effective ingredient concentration of 1367 mg/L.

Slightly acidic electrolyzed water has a strong bactericidal effect, low corrosiveness and low disinfection cost. Using slightly acidic electrolyzed water to spray disinfect vehicles and materials entering the site is an important measure to effectively reduce the threat to the biosafety of the site posed by pathogenic microorganisms carried by transport vehicles.

  • Personnel disinfection

Personnel disinfection is also an important part of pig farm disinfection. Disinfecting personnel’s skin and clothing surfaces with slightly acidic electrolyzed water can simplify the personnel disinfection process and effectively prevent personnel from carrying germs and contamination sources.

  • Disinfection of drinking water pipelines

By adding a certain concentration of slightly acidic electrolyzed water to the drinking water pipeline, it can effectively inhibit the formation of biofilm in the drinking water pipeline, significantly reduce the total number of bacteria in the drinking water, and ensure the safety of animal drinking water.

Slightly acidic electrolyzed water has the characteristics of efficient deodorization and sterilization, no residue, no pollution, easy use and operation, and low price, which determines that it has a very broad prospect in pig farms.

All in all, the application of hypochlorous acid water produced by hypochlorous acid water generator in pig farms provides a reliable guarantee for the healthy growth of pig herds. Its sterilization and disinfection properties can reduce the occurrence of infectious diseases, while being environmentally friendly and safe.

I believe that with the continuous advancement of technology, hypochlorous acid water will play an increasingly important role in the pig farming industry, bringing better development and prospects to the pig farming industry.

Veterinary medicine

Hypochlorous acid has a good killing effect on several common infectious viruses for dogs and cats (canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia virus), and can effectively cut off the source of infection. In a research report by the China Detergent Industry Association, it was pointed out that hypochlorous acid disinfectant can completely kill canine distemper virus, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia virus at room temperature for 5 minutes, and canine parvovirus can completely lose its infectivity after 15 minutes of action. It was further confirmed that hypochlorous acid disinfectant can effectively kill a variety of viruses, including canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia virus, after standing at room temperature for 30 minutes, and the diluted disinfectant has a better effect.

  • Highly safe for pets

Because HOCl is naturally produced in animals, it is an excellent choice for all animal care. Numerous studies have shown that hypochlorous acid wound care sprays and gels can be used in large and small animals at any stage of development.

HOCl is non-toxic, does not contain other chemicals, is non-irritating, and is harmless even if swallowed or licked by animals.

  • Effective for dry skin and rashes

In recent years, the incidence of pet skin diseases is still very high, accounting for about 20% of clinical cases. The pathogenic factors of skin diseases are complex, and it is difficult to identify similar symptoms, which is easy to misdiagnose. In addition, there are differences in breed, age and individual.

Dryness and rashes are probably the most common skin problems for pets. For example, dry skin in dogs is a common problem because dogs are more susceptible to seasonal allergies and other issues than other animals. HOCl is very effective in combating the symptoms of dry skin in dogs.

  • Effective for open wounds

Research shows that hypochlorous acid (HOCl), as an ideal wound care agent, has a powerful and rapid killing effect on different types of microorganisms, biofilms and bacteria in biofilms. Second, it has a dose-dependent beneficial effect on fibroblast and keratinocyte migration. These characteristics make stable HOCl solutions ideal as wound care agents.

Open wounds on animals are very common and can cause animals to become violent. The mild properties of HOCl make it an ideal solution for home wound care (provided the wound is not serious and does not require veterinary treatment).

  • Effective against all types of infections

Animals are susceptible to harmful bacterial infections that can cause many problems. For example, hypochlorous acid wound care spray can be used in the following situations:

Canine yeast infections can cause redness, irritation, or itching on the skin, ears, or paws. Using HOCl can effectively relieve these problems without worrying about irritation or side effects.

Dermatophilosis in pets causes dry, flaking skin and often a lack of hair. HOCl helps reduce bacteria, promotes healing of the infection, and restores your pet’s coat to its glory.

  • Relieve pain caused by treatment

Hypochlorous acid wound care spray or gel is effective in managing the discomfort of post-operative wounds, helps prevent infection, and soothes still-fresh wounds, thereby reducing the temptation for animals to bite and scratch.

However, if your pet has a serious wound that requires surgery, it is best to take them to a professional doctor.

  • Suitable for pets with ear or eye related diseases

Pet ear-related diseases occur from time to time, including ear canal inflammation, ear mites, ear wing swelling, ear hematoma, etc. Most of the drugs used for animal ear care can cause ear irritation and stinging during treatment. HOCl’s mild properties are very suitable for application to areas around the eyes, nose, mouth or ears.

Improve the pet’s growth environment

The preventive measure of using hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to disinfect the pet house can help keep your pet as healthy as possible. At the same time, using hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to wash the items in the pet house or spray the air can reduce odor in the house and improve the pet breeding environment.

The specific dosage of hypochlorous acid in pet care is as follows:

Dilution ratio:

Hypochlorous acid solution is usually used to disinfect livestock and poultry environments, utensils, drinking water, etc. According to the bulletin of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, the dilution ratio of hypochlorous acid solution is 1: (5 to 10) times for spraying disinfection of livestock and poultry environments and physical surfaces of utensils, and 1: 100 times for drinking water disinfection.

Action time:

Hypochlorous acid disinfectant can effectively kill canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, feline calicivirus and feline distemper virus after being exposed to room temperature for 1 minute; these viruses can completely lose their infectivity on cells after being exposed to the disinfectant for 5 minutes; and canine parvovirus can completely lose its infectivity on cells after being exposed to the disinfectant for 15 minutes.

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is naturally produced in animals and is therefore considered the best choice for all animal care. It is non-toxic, does not contain other chemicals, is non-irritating to pet skin and mucous membranes, and is suitable for disinfecting organs such as ears, eyes, nose, and mouth . In addition, hypochlorous acid has been proven to be used for wound care. As early as 2016, the US FDA has approved wound care agents based on hypochlorous acid.
